Dear Dylan

One of our all time favourite underwear labels, Dear Dylan is a little gem from New Zealand that has changed the way we see intimates. We were lucky to sit down with the three best friends behind the brand to talk about how it got started, juggling multiple careers, and their fashion influences.

Where do you call home?
Tauranga, in the beautiful Bay Of Plenty in New Zealand

What were you doing before Dear Dylan?
We are all juggling individual careers alongside Dear Dylan. Bridget is a graphic designer, Rach is an interior designer and Em is a flower farmer. We all had backgrounds/interest in the fashion industry prior to our current career paths, so it felt like a natural progression starting our own label.

We spent a long time searching for the perfect underwear brand before we stumbled upon yours. The market is quite flooded and yet your pieces seem to tap into a niche or blind spot in the underwear game. What made you want to start the brand?
Initially it was the three of us on holiday in Bali, floating ideas around poolside. We knew we wanted to start a brand together and the conversations were always centred around what we wanted to wear everyday as our base layers. For us Dear Dylan has always been about creating a brand with a focus on form and function, comfort and versatility is key. Quality was also paramount so we spent a long time researching fabrications.

We think that your Boyfriend Briefs are the perfect piece of loungewear. Describe your ideal night in.
Bridget: Good music, a cheese platter, a spiced rum, and a spa.

Rach: A good ol' romcom, a peppermint tea, and wrapped up with the hubby.

Em: Thai takeout and a good book.

Your pieces seem to have a 90s influence, with subtle nods to menswear. Did you have any specific points of inspiration when designing your first collection?
Our collection pays tribute to the underwear styles seen in the 90’s, with hints of a traditional masculine aesthetic. This is represented in certain design elements such as the topstitch detailing on our bottoms, often seen in menswear. Our boyfriend shorts are a feminine take on mens boxer Briefs.

What would we find playing in your studio?
We have quite an eclectic taste in music so depending who gets to the office first it can be anything from hip hop, 90’s rock….
